When 
someone, referring to an older person says, "how nice, how young he is," is implicitly saying that good, in fact, is young. Everything else is tinkering. Is saying that what is seen is the youth socially, and that being old is not a value, but almost a default. Another revealing sentence: "In my day", "implies that the appropriate time, place, and have passed: there is no significant gap for the elderly. Gradually becomes established the presumption, if not conviction, of not belonging to this period. Thus, the older person feels left out and every day confirms it is losing social relevance.
But being old is your stuff positive. Without going any further, feeling the protagonist of his own evolution as a person, more than ever, an important member of the community to which he belongs. Society, not deny it (how many movies or TV films, commercials, or fashion shows main characters are older people?) Discriminates against the elderly, but they also have some responsibility in that, sometimes unconsciously, involved active ("it is up to young people who decide them") in this process of segregation and disrespect of the elderly.
